Musical ancient trip to Kytöjoki

BUY A TICKET.

The musical ancient tour takes the participants to Kytöjoki's tafon and rock painting, and to Hiekkaniemi's dwelling and echo site. The musicality of the trip will be guaranteed by musical guests Tuomas Rounakari, Clayton Nile Young (USA), Salman Rafique (Pakistan), Minna Hokka ja Jukka Takalo.

The excursion's music program is born and lives in a moment. Musicians play when they feel like it and what the place and company inspires them to play. Sometimes we also keep quiet and listen.

Musicians

tuomas rounakari.jpg

Thomas Rounakari is a Finnish violinist, composer, ethnomusicologist and educator. Rounakari has researched the ritual music of the Finno-Ugric and Arctic peoples and played a significant role in reviving the Karelian lament tradition. He has composed music for films, TV and theaters. He was also a member of the folk-metal band Korpiklaani (2012-2022).

Clayton-Nile-Young-646x336.jpg

Clayton Nile Young is a fast-rising American artist who combines folk, country and Americana in his music. His most recent album, Della (2024), is one of the most popular new folk albums of 2024 globally, and showcases Clayton's ability to tell emotional and profound stories that incorporate both traditional and modern elements. Clayton Nile Young will perform on Friday 25.7. In Karvio at the Haywater Country Music Festival and makes a special visit during Ancient Week.

salman rafique.jpg

Pakistani Salman Rafique is a respected musician in his home country, whose main instruments are guitar and percussion. He played drums in Pakistan's first prog metal band, Qayaas, and toured metal festivals around the world with it. During the ancient week of Heinävesi, he will be a special guest throughout the event.

Jukka Takalo is best known for his band Aknestik. He has also had an extensive solo career and gifted the world with the Air Guitar World Championships.

Destinations

Kytöjoki tafone has been one of the most popular destinations for ancient tours. It is a heart-shaped cavity hollowed out in the transfer block, which can fit an adult - or even two small adults - to sit inside. It is very interesting as an acoustic space, because inside the stone even small sounds can be heard loudly and if you sit in the stone for a longer time, you also start to hear your own heartbeat.

According to the story, tafone was used by a local scientist as far back as the 19th century. According to the story, he meditated by sitting on a stone all day long, and he also healed the sick by sitting them inside the stone. However, he gave up on the latter when the stone tried to eat the patient.

More

The residences and hunting pits of Hiekkaniemi found in autumn 2022 are one of the most significant discoveries of the Heinävesi Antiquities Society. On a narrow sandy promontory on the shore of Lake Suurijärvi, there are four probably Stone Age dwelling pits, and in addition, numerous quartz stones were found in the shore water. In addition, there are a dozen trap pits on the neighboring island separated by a narrow strait, which indicates extensive and long-term settlement.

However, Hiekkaniemi has been chosen for this trip above all because of its acoustic properties. There is an amazing echo at the tip of the promontory. When we tested it last fall on a very foggy day, the sound bounced from different directions at least five times and possibly more, because without recording equipment it was difficult to separate the echoes. In dry air, the echo is even stronger, so the place is great for various musical and acoustic experiments. Hiekkaniemi is also a very nice excursion and snack destination, because there is also a campfire place at the tip of the cape.

Excursion information

Transportation with the museum bus of the Finnish bus historical society, which is a local bus model year 1973. Bus schedule:

At 12 Heimon tuva, Suojalantie 1, 79700 Heinävesi

At 12.15 Heinävesi port, Kermanrannantie 48, 79700 Heinävesi

At 12:45 Karvio campsite, Takunlahdentie 2, 79810 Karvionkanava

Return journey in reverse order.

The price of the excursion includes an excursion snack: large Karelian pasties and tomato, cheese and ham as a side dish, as well as coffee and/or tea. We also reserve water, but at least you should bring thirst-quenching drinks with you.

A toilet break can be arranged at the village shop in Sarvikumpu. We also have a separate chemical toilet.

Terrain

The terrain on the trip is mostly easy, except for the route leading to the rock paintings. Kytöjoki's tafoni is about 50 meters from the road, and the route to it goes through the rut of a forest machine.

Hiekkaniemi is approx. A 300-meter walk along a flat path. Jouhtenisenvuori is a smooth, mossy pine fabric. You have to walk about 400 meters to get there along the track of the forest machine.

The rock paintings are about 200 meters from the tafone. The terrain is partly swampy, partly quarries, so the route is challenging. We recommend water-resistant footwear suitable for the terrain.

Ancient tour: Honkaniemi footstone, Kerivuori cave and Koukunvuori sacrificial stones and ritual path

BUY A TICKET.

The destinations of the ancient tour are the Kerivuori cave and the beautiful Koukunvuori, which has three footstones and a ritual path.

Honkaniemi's footstone, "hatching chicken", is the first officially registered footstone from Heinävesi. The boulder standing on three stones is an impressive ancient monument. There is also another footstone near it and a rock wall with a strong echo at its base.

More information on Honkaniemi.

Kerivuori is a fascinating place that you hardly end up in by chance. On the western slope of the mountain is a half-kilometer-wide cliff, at the northernmost end of which is one of the most impressive caves in Heinävesi. In any case, there are numerous cavities in the slope that can be classified as caves. The terrain near Kerivuori is rocky and relatively challenging, but the cave rewards a couple of hundred meters of walking.

More information on Kerivuori.

At the top of Koukunvuori, there is a boulder resting on seven smaller stones, which is marked on the map as "Uhrikivi", offering stone. It is the only boulder in Heinävesi that has received official status as a sacrificial stone on the maps. The writer Juhani Aho, who fished in the area and wrote about his experiences, is apparently behind the designation.

In addition to the "offering stone", Koukunvuori has two other footstones and a couple of obvious calking stones. So it seems that a ritual path has once passed along the ridge of the mountain.
Koukunvuori is also impressive as a natural destination. The long rocky ridge is covered by lichen-covered pine and the entire area is characterized by silence and peace.

Presentation of Koukunvuori.

Transport
Transportation by own car or carpooling.

Terrain

Terrain In Honkaniemi is a bit rocky, uneven and wet. Walk about 500 meters. Outdoor shoes are recommended.

On Kerivuori the terrain is challenging. Part of the journey is partly through quarried forest, partly through wet terrain. There is also a crossing of a small river on the way (you can reach it along the rocks with dry feet). Hiking shoes and walking poles are recommended. Walk about 400 m.

To Koukunvuori the route goes a little way on the road and the rest of the way on a path that goes on dry pine cloth and on the ridge of the rock. Easy terrain, walk about 1.5 km.

Mon 28.7. klo 10–16
North Karelian Brelo trumpet workshop

In the workshop, a North Karelian Brelo trumpet is built from that.

The Brelo is a 65-130 cm long trumpet instrument with a wooden body and also covered, without finger holes, with a tube that ends in a separate echo funnel. The material of the reverberatory funnel is a strong string, sheet metal and cow horn. Alder and aspen have been used as materials for the frame. In North Karelia, Brelo has been a shepherd's instrument; In Pohjois Savo, on the other hand, it is said that brelo was used e.g. to call shepherds out of the forest. In the 17th century, the brelo, developed from a hatch on the west bank of Laatoka, has also been used in places in Etelä-Savo and Inkeri.

The teacher is traditional instrument expert Minna Hokka. In addition to the workshop, group playing practices are also available Tuesday-Thursday.

Film premiere: Roots in the stone

Roots in the stone is Mikko Keinonen's essay film about an ancient story set in Heinävesi, which he inherits to tell from the distant past. The film is a dive into a world where mythology and everyday reality and the invisible and the visible naturally live side by side. It is also a strongly personal description of the painful growth as part of an ancient chain of narrators.

Mikko Keinonen has been working on the film "Roots deep in stone" since 2011. This is the first public showing of the film. After the screening, there will be an opportunity to discuss the film and the thoughts it evokes.

Ancient tour: Footstones of Putukka and Takunniemi, Heinämäki rock painting, Polvilamminvuori

BUY A TICKET

The Tuesday excursion of Ancient Week goes to Heinävesi's North and East Heinävesi. The destinations are Putukka's footstone, Takunniemi's footstone, Heinämäki rock painting and Polvilamminvuori cave.

The foot stone of Putukka is only about a hundred meters from highway 23, but it is easy to forget the proximity of the stone cave to the roads. The footstone stands on the edge of a cliff, and it is separated from the road by a deep valley and an impressive raven forest. About a hundred meters away, there is also a beautiful, lichen covered rock ridge with another, smaller footstone.
Takunniemi footstone is one of the most handsome footstones in Heinävesi. It rests on three smaller rocks at the top of a rock ridge. Under the stone is a crawl space for adults. There are also three lime stones near the stone.

More info on Takunniemi footstone.

The Heinämäki rock painting is a few kilometers from Valamo near Kansalantie. The painting is on the south side of the transfer block. The interpretation of the pattern in the painting has remained unclear, and based on its coloring, it has been speculated that it may be a painting from the historical period.

More info on Heinämäki rock painting.

The Polvilamminvuori cave is one of the most recent discoveries of the ancient society. Veli Hokka found the cave in the summer of 2022.

The cave is a tunnel a few meters long, about a meter high and a couple of meters wide. At the base of its wall is a wide vein of quartz, and at the bottom of the cave there are chunks of quartz broken from the wall. So there has been quite a large quartz quarry in the cave.

The whole of Pollammenvuori is a very fascinating destination. The eastern side of the mountain has a uniform, approximately 30-meter-high cliff. There are many ledges and small caves in the wall. The area has been explored quite a bit, so there is probably still much more to discover.

More info on Polvilamminvuori.

Terrain
The foot stone of Laukankallio is about 200 meters from the road. The route runs across a wide power line, where there is some difficult terrain. Otherwise, the route is easy.

You can reach Takunniemi's footstone by following the track of a forest machine, and the walking distance is a couple of hundred meters.

The Heinämäki rock painting is about 50 meters from the road. The terrain is easy to navigate.

You can get to Polillammivuori by a forest car track, which is steep

on the slope. The bottom of the valley is rocky and variable, and not suitable for people with bad feet.

We recommend water-resistant footwear suitable for the terrain.

Schedule
Departure at 10 a.m. from Heimon tupa, Suojalantie 1, 79700 Heinävesi

The second meeting place is Neste Karvionkanava at 10:30 am.

Concert: Alexey Chichakov (Altai), Tuomas Rounakari

  • Location: Heinävesi harbor, Kermanrannantie 48, Heinävesi

  • Price 25 € / 20 €. BUY A TICKET

Alexey Chichakov is one of the most anticipated guests of Heinävesi's ancient week. Alexey has toured Finland several times and played more than 20 concerts in our country, gathering a constantly growing audience. Now, however, a couple of years have passed since the last gig, because the last time Alexey performed in Finland was as the main performer of the Heinävesi Ancient Week in 2024. Even now, he only stops by for a few days, holding a concert, a workshop and a cleansing ritual in Heinävesi, because his summer weekends are full of festival performances mainly in Russia, but also in Japan and Nepal.

Alexey Chichakov is a captivating performer whose art is based on the Altaic kai-throat singing tradition. However, he takes traditions to new dimensions, using both traditional instruments (topshuur lute, shoor flute, munnharpu and sound bowls) and modern technology (guitar, live looping) in his music. As a versatile musician and charismatic performer, Alexey takes his listeners on a magical sound journey where they completely lose track of time. The concerts also include a jam session, where other musicians are also welcome on stage.

tuomas rounakari.jpg

Tuomas Rounakari is a Finnish violinist, composer, ethnomusicologist and educator. Rounakari has researched the ritual music of the Finno-Ugric and Arctic peoples and played a significant role in reviving the Karelian lament tradition. He has composed music for films, TV and theaters. He was also a member of the folk-metal band Korpiklaan (2012-2022).

In his solo concerts, Tuomas Rounakari performs Finnish-Ugric traditional songs with explosive intensity.

Wednedsay 30.7.

Wed 30.7. at 10 am Ancient excursion to Jouhtenisenvuori, Levänen and Karhukivi

BUY A TICKET

Jouhtenisenvuori is unique even by the standards of Heinävesi's beautiful nature. The hectare-wide Jouhteninen laki, covered with beautiful pine fabric and colored by numerous boulders, offers endless things to see for the curious seeker and a magical environment for those who want to be quiet in the peace of nature, together or alone.

Jouhtenisenvuori is in the middle of an area that has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Within a radius of a few kilometers, there are, for example, the residences and hunting pits of Kytöjoki, the quartz quarry of Polvilammenvuori and the discovery site of the legendary Kortemäki bear's head axe. In addition, Jouhtenisenvuori is along the waterway between Juojärvi and Suurijärvi.

Jouhtenisenvuori also has at least one calcareous stone and possible corner stones. On the other hand, the area is so vast that there is enough to discover for many research trips. However, based on the findings, the nature and location of the place, it can be considered very likely that Jouhteninenvuori has been a sacred place for the tribes that lived in the area.

More info on Jouhtenisenvuori.

Leväsenvuori and Karhukivi are new destinations in the ancient society's selection of excursions. Leväsenvuori is opposite Jouhteninenvuori, and on its top there is an impressive boundary stone, which is dated to the 18th century. Karhukivi, on the other hand, is clearly an ancient place of worship just by its name.

Terrain
The distance to Jouhteninenvuori by car is about half a kilometer. The route goes through a forest machine rut, and there the terrain consists of mosses and lichens, pine cloth and silage rock. The terrain is therefore relatively easy, but we recommend water-resistant footwear suitable for the terrain.

Senses of the Ancient workshop

IMG_0674.jpg

The workshop is meant for people with visual, hearing or mobility impairments. The goal is to offer participants the opportunity to deepen their sensory experiences and explore the atmosphere and history of ancient places in their own way. The workshop offers many opportunities to experience the environment with different senses and broadens the perception of old places.

The workshop begins with the selection of a place: the participants are guided to find a place to stay that feels right and is good to settle into. The place can be on the ground, on a mattress, on a stone, on a fallen tree or in a standing position. This process is an important part of the workshop as it helps participants focus on their surroundings and open their senses. Finding a place that suits you creates the best possible conditions for a deep sensory experience and examination of the experience.

In the second stage of the workshop, the participants focus on sensing the environment of the place they have chosen. For some, hearing is the best way to experience the atmosphere of a place, while others experience it best by feeling the ground under their feet, the wind on their skin, or the connection opened by their senses to other natural phenomena. Some may see visual images or shapes in their mind, others may be inspired by their own place to move or dance. Some may fall in love with listening to the soundscape or the silence.

Once the participants have sensed the essence of the place, they are asked to express their experience. This can happen through movement, sounds, songs, poems, drawings or works made of natural materials. The most important thing is that the participant gets to deepen and explore the sensations, thoughts and insights evoked by the place.

The workshop ends with consideration and reflection of the experience. Participants are asked to creatively express their experiences and insights during the workshop. They can express their experiences through music, dance or poetry, for example. At the end of the workshop, the participants brainstorm together ways in which archaeological sites and the people's sacred places could support people's lives, well-being and finding their own roots.

A trip to Pilppa footstones and Vieruvuori ritual path

Featuring musicians Veera Neva, Lauri Hallikainen, Salman Rafique, Minna Hokka and Harri Loiva.

The excursion's music program is born and lives in a moment. Musicians play when they feel like it and what the place and company inspires them to play. Sometimes we also keep quiet and listen.

Musicians

Veera Neva is a one-woman orchestra whose music takes the listener on an enchanting journey from the Elevation of Nature to the support of the Great Stream of life. The sanctity of nature, mythological elements and a magical connection with nature play in Neva's music. The palette combines e.g. ambient, folk music, vocal music, electroacoustic music, film music and sound art. The worlds woven together with his own voice, saxophone and electronic sounds offer the experiencer the opportunity to indulge in his inner spaces and mythical state of mind.

salman rafique.jpg

Pakistani Salman Rafique is a respected musician in his home country, whose main instruments are guitar and percussion. He played drums in Pakistan's first prog metal band, Qayaas, and toured metal festivals around the world with it. During the ancient week of Heinävesi, he will be a special guest throughout the event.

Destinations

Pilppa's foot stones have been a popular excursion destination for years. The largest of the stones is a boulder standing on the edge of the cliff, with three smaller stones underneath. One of them was possibly placed by man, and regardless of the history of the formation, it can be considered fairly certain that the footstone was a ritual place.

sonja ja pilpan kivi netti.jpg

Next to the big footstone is one of Heinävesi's most impressive liming stones, which can be made to thump by stepping on them and fill the neighborhood with their sound. About 70 meters from the big stone, there is also another footstone, which is like a miniature model of the bigger one. The stones also seem to be connected by some kind of acoustic corridor, as the sound carries from one stone to another as if the sound source were right next to it.

More information on Pilppa.

The court stones of Pilpa are on the side of the Kolovesi National Park in a beautiful pine forest. The group of table and four seats is completed by two lime stones, which gives an indication of the significance of the court table. It also seems that a ritual path has passed near the corner stones, as there are several calking stones and one quite obvious sacrificial stone along the way.

Alma Solina trio, Minna Hokka

Risto is a cult band named after the frontman Risto Ylihärsilä.Risto has become one of Finland's most significant indie bands during its twenty-year career. This is proven, among other things, by the fact that in an extensive critics' vote held a few years ago, Risto's second album Aurinko aurinka plaa plaa plaa was ranked 3rd in the search for the best domestic rock album of the millennium. Risto's debut Risto also ranked nicely at 14th.

risto muinaisviikko 2023.jpg

In Ancient Week, Risto will perform without his regular band, but Ancient Week's in-house musician Harri Loiva will also be playing, and in addition to that, it can be assumed that others will be seen on stage during the evening. As such, it doesn't matter, because whether or not anyone is on stage besides Risto Ylihärsilä, Risto is able to use his synth arsenal to create a massive soundscape and a relatively insane groove, which, combined with his manic unpredictable stage charisma, leaves no one cold.

almakuva.jpg

Alma Solina describes her music like this:
"Creating a new song, making music together, performing my own music and touching people with words, song, tunes - presence - these are immeasurably valuable and infinitely happy moments for me, in which I really feel that I am truly living my mission in life.

I write music in Finnish and English. The biggest themes in my music are universal love, freedom, own power, hope and light. With my music, I want to offer a broader perspective on even challenging themes, to encourage people to free themselves from all possible boxes and little prisons created by the mind."

A musical ancient trip to Humalniemi

The excursion destinations of the day are the Humalniemi rock painting and Jumppanen's cave.

Destinations

Humalniemi offers stories and mind-blowing details. There is a small rock painting on the southern wall of Humniemi's rock ridge, the pattern of which is common even today in Lapland's witch drums. The rock painting has a very strong echo, and you can try it with, for example, the lime stone in front of the painting.

More information on Humalniemi.

On the northern edge of the rock ridge, on the shore of Iso-Vihtari, there is a network of cracks and tunnels inside the rock, and among them is the Jumppanen cave, the residence of the last Lappans of Heinävesi. The cave is a cavity consisting of three human-passable chambers, which sinks five meters into the rock. It is also acoustically interesting, because the low sounds produced by singing or otherwise in the cave make the whole rock resonate.

Karhukallio has very likely been an ancient ritual place.

Sat 2.8. at 12 Cattle call workshop

In this workshop, you will get an introduction to the deep-rooted Nordic cattle calling tradition known as 'kulning'. Kulning consists of talkative, short and nasal calls and more melodious high-pitched calls.

Sini Koskelainen_Kulning kuva metsä_(c) Sanni Pasuri.jpg

This loud sound-making method developed in the Middle Ages as a means of communication, which could be used to call grazing cattle home even from long distances, and with which messages could be passed between different shepherds. Livestock callers were usually women, whose duties had traditionally included tending livestock.

Workshop leader Sini Koskelainen learned about this tradition from the Swedish folk musician-composer Eva Rune, and by practicing the tradition independently in Since 2016, based on archive materials, recordings and textbooks.

Workshop instructor: singer/composer Sini Koskelainen, known from the band Tuuletar.

The musical culmination of Heinävesi Ancient Week takes place on the Kermankoski stage, which was chosen as the most beautiful dance stage in Finland last year. In the evening's marathon concert, Pekko Käppi & K.H.H.L., Noiduin, Veera Neva, Pilke, Salman Rafique and Ikiverso will perform.

khhl_0525_lores.jpg

Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L is from Tampere, the hottest and loudest quartet in the Finnish folk rock sky today. The band was founded after the release of Pekko Käpin's album Rammat jumat, known as a jouhiko artist and singer-songwriter, in 2013. Since then, the band has made five albums, received praise for them, and toured our planet crisscross. A respected English music publication described the band with the phrase: "T. Rex of Finland".

Airy folk expression, blues roots and psychedelic rock have been thrown into Pekko Käpi's mortar. Chopped up in a bowl-like dish, the end result is delightful folk music planted in the mold of popular music that is approachable in a characteristically ingenious way. Live, the band's sound is easily even hypnotic, when the breathlessly progressing atmospheres of the band and the swaying, effortless folk playing drift completely unnoticed, like a spoiled dog chasing its own tail, into a furious rock-fest.

The stories bursting with Northern Gothic and the mantra-like fragments of the mosaic mirror world of existence merge in the most remarkable ways with the band's organic power, which cannot be stopped and which makes the little bird in your soul dance.

Noiduin promo2 netti.jpg

Noiduin is a dark folk band from Pori that combines folk traditions, shamanism and pagan mysticism in their music. The band is known for its deep connection with Finnish nature, and the band members not only play traditional instruments, but they also build them themselves.

The central instruments are the kantele and jouhikko, but the sound world is also enriched by various round drums made of reindeer and elk hide, horns and percussion made of natural materials. These handmade instruments represent skills passed down from generation to generation and deepen the connection to our musical heritage. The band's music draws from the poems and spells of the Kalevala, and it brings the stories of the past to life in a universal way that can be identified regardless of cultural background.

Our goal is to bring ancient stories to life, creating a new kind of connection between ancient traditions and modern times.

Veera Neva is a one-woman orchestra whose music takes the listener on an enchanting journey from the Elevation of Nature to the support of the Great Stream of life. The sanctity of nature, mythological elements and a magical connection with nature play in Neva's music.

The worlds woven together with his own voice, saxophone and electronic sounds offer the experiencer the opportunity to indulge in his inner spaces and mythical state of mind. Neva has released two solo albums, several video works and her music has also been played in short films.

ikiverso netti.jpg

Ikiverso is a musical duo formed by Lakota Longwalker and Tuulikki Jalkanen, whose tunes echo the cultural characteristics of Finnish and American indigenous peoples. The instruments are violin, guitar, vocals and Native American instruments. The compositions are by Jalkanen and Longwalker.

Ikiverso's music invites you to stories and power - from isolation to connection with people and nature.

Lakota Longwalker is a Native American (Tsalagi "Cherokee") folk/rock musician, stone carver, Native American flute/instrument maker, and beadwork artisan. He produces and composes Native American music and has garnered two nominations at the Native American Awards as a solo artist for his debut album, "Thunder in the Canyon" and his second solo album, "The tradition." Longwalker has also revived a lost stone flute construction method that originated with the Inca and Lakota peoples.

Tuulikki Jalkanen is an artist, musician and music therapist from Suonenjoki, currently living in Nurmijärvi. In his art, Jalkanen explores, among other things, female figures, often through mythological themes. In addition, forgotten stories, characters and roots are heard and seen in Tuulik's works, both in music and visual art. As a music therapist, Jalkanen's passion is the ancient, communal, universal human and ritual power of music - everyone's musicality and the universal meaning of music for people.
